DigiMaths4All: Research, collaboration and impact!
The DigiMaths4All project explores how technology-enhanced learning and computational thinking can help fourth-grade students across different achievement levels develop stronger mathematical skills and problem-solving abilities.
Recently, the project reached an important milestone as the intervention in Lithuanian schools was successfully completed. Teachers provided encouraging feedback on the experience.
International collaboration continues within the project. We had the pleasure of welcoming Researcher Rimantas Žakauskas from Vilnius University to the University of Turku, where he met with members of the TRILA developer team.
The DigiMaths4all team has also produced several new research outputs:
- Jasutė, Parviainen & Dagienė: Computational Thinking in Technology-Supported Primary Mathematics: A Systematic Review
A systematic review of 18 studies shows that digital technologies such as programming, robotics, games and learning-analytics systems can integrate computational thinking into primary mathematics and support mathematical problem-solving, while also highlighting the need for stronger methodological evidence and more scalable, long-term classroom research.
- Parviainen: Task Design and Intervention Model for Integrating Computational Thinking into Primary Mathematics
The paper presents a replicable, technology-supported intervention model developed within DigiMaths4All that systematically integrates computational thinking processes, including decomposition, abstraction, algorithmic thinking and debugging, into primary mathematics problem-solving through structured task design and learning analytics.
- Lehtonen et al.: The Interplay of Fourth Graders’ Mathematics Attitudes and Performance: A Multilevel Study
Using multilevel modelling of data from 639 fourth-grade students, the study finds that more positive attitudes toward mathematics are strongly associated with higher mathematical performance, with this relationship remaining consistent across classrooms, underscoring the importance of supporting students’ confidence and engagement in mathematics.
