Exploring Mathematical Development Through Collaborative Research

Over the past years, we have been incredibly privileged to collaborate with outstanding scholars from around the world and to welcome them to visit our research unit. This spring, we had the honor of hosting Karen De Keersmaeker at TRILA for six weeks as part of a research collaboration. The collaboration focused on the analysis and interpretation of data from Karen’s longitudinal project on the co-development of mathematical language and mathematical skills in children.

Karen worked closely with our Professor dr. Jake McMullen, alongside our Senior Research Fellow Jo Van Hoof, who reflected on her time working with Karen:

Working with Karen led to enriching explorations of complex processes and provided valuable opportunities to exchange ideas across our different perspectives and areas of expertise.

Aside from the research, we also greatly enjoyed the social side of Karen’s visit, including an international lunch, a beach picnic, a writing retreat, and a scavenger hunt as part of our team development day. These moments made the stay feel not only productive but also warm and memorable, allowing us to truly get to know Karen.
